UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
