For the documentarian, whose professional life chronicling strands of US history covering diverse cultural topics, the revolutionary period transcends ordinary historical coverage but foundational. “I said this to my co-director Sarah Botstein during our discussions, and she shared this view: this represents our most significant project Burns contemplates during a telephone interview.

Massive Research Effort

Burns and his collaborators along with writer Geoffrey Ward drew upon thousands of books and primary source materials. This allowed them to present viewers not only to the “bold-faced names” of that era but also to “dozens of others crucial to understanding, several participants lack visual representation.

The filmmaker also explored his particular enthusiasm for maps and spatial representation. “I love maps,” he notes, “featuring increased geographical representation throughout this series versus earlier productions I’ve done combined.”

Filmmakers captured footage across multiple important places across North America plus English locations to document environmental context and partnered extensively with re-enactors. For him, the revolution is a story that “typically is drowning in sentimentality and nostalgia and is incredibly superficial and doesn’t have the respect the historical reality, all contributors and the extensive brutality.

Taylor maintains, a revolution that proclaimed the revolutionary principle of inherent human rights; a vicious internal conflict, separating rebels and supporters; plus an international conflict, continuing previous patterns of conflicts between Britain, France and Spain for dominance in the New World.
