The English golfer Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster final round of competition.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion started the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.

Play-Off Climax

That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
