Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim First Victories Following Recent Detentions

NBA game action

The Miami Heat recorded 86 first-half points against the Grizzlies

The Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after guard Terry Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping federal probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.

But, the Miami team were focused as they scored eighty-six first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."

Portland also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.

"So, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and investigating."
