American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to climate and other issues.

More than three thousand American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields indicated flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown began.
